Xbox One claims a new record for the highest launch week sales for console hardware in Australian history.

NPD Group Account Mananger ANZ, Luis Gil, confirmed that 65,917 consoles were sold in the first three days, saying, “Xbox One now also hold the record for the highest console sales in launch week, more than doubling Nintendo Wii’s previous record of 32,900 units."

Today's announcement from Microsoft, coming ten days after the PlayStation 4 launch, can only mean the Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 in Australia. However, when asked by MCV to confirm this neither Microsoft nor the NPD Group nor Sony have as yet offered further comment.

EB Games merchandising director, Shane Stockwell, had previously told Kotaku that for EB the Xbox One was the biggest console launch of all time while the PS4 launch was merely "one of" the biggest.

UPDATE: The NPD Group has since confirmed to MCV that the record Microsoft is claiming still applies after the PS4 launch.
