Worldwide sales record broken by Call of Duty... again

Activision has announced today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 broke sales records as being the fastest selling entertainment property in history.

While Activision hasn't given out the specific number of units sold through, it has confirmed that on day one 3.3 million unique people were playing the game online, and that the gross revenue for the title reached USD$775 million in the first 5 days on sale, the highest from any entertainment product ever.

This groundbreaking figure knocked off the previous record-holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops (USD$650 million), which knocked off it's previous record-holder, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (USD$550 million), both according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

Robert Kotick, CEO of Acitvision Blizzard, said: "Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment."

"Online play for Modern Warfare 3 is at record levels and we continue to see high online play for both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which ranked as the #2 and #4 top-played Xbox LIVE games for the week of November 7, according to Major Nelson."

Kotick says that the total franchise sales now exceed USD$6 billion, with no signs of slowing down.
