Wikileaks cables suggest iiNet was specifically chosen for lawsuit

Last year saw Australian ISP iiNet fighting a vicious legal battle, which Wikileaks is now saying was a targeted attack.

The cables suggest endorsement by the US Embassy in Canberra of the lawsuit by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the international Motion Picture Association (MPA) as being a strategic move to take on an ISP in a country with similar laws (useful for achieving precedent) to the US.

Additionally, iiNet was allegedly targeted as a testbed due to its limited resources, it having taken pride in being Australia's #2 ISP for some time.

The moves didn't pan out in any case, with iiNet defeating all lawsuits so far which suggest that an ISP can be responsible for copyright infringement and other illegal activities performed by its users, and few remaining avenues left to try.

iiNet has persevered and grown in spite of having to fight a battle larger than its size would deem possible, going on to acquire rival Australian ISP Internode late last year.
