THQ Australia rolls out a territory-specific red carpet

Last Thursday, THQ Asia-Pacific ran its arm of the company's global Pre-E3 showcase event.

The event took place in a new bar in The Rocks, Sydney, where THQ showcased Metro: Last Light and Company of Heroes 2 in presentation format, and had the whole place decked out with IDUs for Darksiders 2 and Lost Planet 3.

A packed out room full of Australian gaming media saw brand new demos for Metro and COH, and were treated to drinks with an Opera House view, plus developer interviews with 5 different devs from across each title shortly afterwards.

The move away from THQ's usual grand E3 showfloor appearance makes sense, given the company's restructure focused on primarily streamlining their activities, leveraging their existing PR networks to prevent the extravagant and costly annual E3 hit.

The event ran smoothly and gave journalists access to exactly what they each needed from the titles - enough hands-on time to form an early enough opinion and a few words from the creators to spice things up where needed.

It may not be the hallmark of a company enjoying lavish successes to avoid the pomp and glamour of E3, but there's been something askew about the grandiloquence of E3 next to the global recession, industry-wide sets of layoffs and restructures and other such grim news.

It shows initiative on THQ's part, and will undoubtedly be welcomed heartily by journalists who lament the chaos of the show and just need to get their jobs done.
