Sony: New PS4 stock coming early next year

New shipments of PlayStation 4 stock will see all pre-orders finally fulfilled in February, Sony promises.

In addition, "thousands more" consumers who did not pre-order will be able to purchase the in-demand console.

The PS4 has been out of stock since launch where only some of those who pre-ordered were able to secure their console. Last week, EB Games said PS4 shortages would continue well into 2014.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director, Michael Ephraim says, “Since launch on November 29 our priority has always been to get additional stock into Australia as quickly as possible to fulfil the overwhelming demand. The best way to guarantee your PS4 in February is by going to your preferred retailer, either in store or online, before Christmas to place your pre-order. With this announcement, it looks like Christmas will come again in February for players across Australia.”

UPDATE: After we posted this story, Sony contacted us to further clarify the PS4 stock situation. According to Sony "the next shipment of PS4 isn't February, it is December and replenishment will be taking place from this week for customers who have pre-ordered." Sony also added that the purpose of their statement today was "to inform those who have missed out pre-Christmas that we are working with retailers to ensure significant stock quantities of PS4 are available as early as possible in 2014."

We have amended this story's headline to reflect the updated information. Here is the full statement issued by Sony earlier today, from which we ran our original story.

SYDNEY, 18 December, 2013: Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Aust.) today confirmed it is expecting significant quantities of the new PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system to arrive in Australia early next year. The new stock will not only fulfil all current pre-orders but will offer thousands more fans the opportunity to own a PlayStation 4 from February 2014 onwards. With the demand for this next gen console surpassing all expectations, SCE Aust. has worked with Australian retailers to limit fans’ wait time for their console.

Michael Ephraim, Managing Director at SCE Aust., said, “Since launch on November 29 our priority has always been to get additional stock into Australia as quickly as possible to fulfil the overwhelming demand. The best way to guarantee your PS4 in February is by going to your preferred retailer, either in store or online, before Christmas to place your pre-order. With this announcement, it looks like Christmas will come again in February for players across Australia.”

PlayStation 4 has already broken records globally, with 2.1 million units sold in its first two weeks making it the biggest launch ever for a console game system. Experts are also predicting that PS4 will be the number one console game system of this new generation*.
