Freeplay Independent Games Festival 2013 details announced

The Freeplay Independent Games Festival has announced the dates and theme of its 2013 conference, and the NowPlay mentorship program.

The Festival will be held in Melbourne, at the State Library of Victoria, on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of September.

The program this year is titled Volume of Revolution, a theme that “seeks to expose, radically upend, celebrate, critically examine and change our approach to making games,” say Festival organisers. “It’s looking back at our history so we can forge a better future. It’s a mathematical concept representing the cycle, the fullness, the width and breadth of our medium. It’s about loudness, and listening to the quiet voices we cannot ignore.”

In addition, Freeplay in conjunction with Pop Up Playground, will introduce the new NowPlay Mentorship program, designed to “encourage and support the development of emerging designers working in the field of play.” The winning designer or team will be announced at the 2013 conference.

This year, Freeplay is run new directors Katie Williams and Harry Lee. Williams is a freelance journalist who has appeared in numerous Australian and international publications, and Lee is an independent developer at Wanderlands.

“We feel that there is no place better suited in Victoria than the State Library to conduct and encourage vital, high-quality discussion of innovation in the development of both digital and non-digital games,” said the pair in a joint statement.
