PriceWaterhouseCoopers has confirmed to MCV that the first layoffs has begun at GAME today, with a source claiming more to come.
GAME Australia has lost 281 staff (of its over 500 employees) today, 264 from stores and 17 from its head office in Castle Hill, New South Wales.
A source close to the matter told MCV that there would be more big moves to come early to mid next week.
Kate Warwick, administrator for GAME at PwC, said: “This is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. However it is not financially viable to continue to operate at this level at this time.”
“PwC has been in touch with the Federal Government Department that deals with General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme (GEERS) and will assist the employees with their applications.”
GAME Australia entered administration last week, and the first meeting with creditors was held this Wednesday, where administrators PriceWaterhouseCoopers found several expressions of interest, but no firm buyers for the company.
Our thoughts are with those affected by the layoffs so far.
