BRAND MAP: Metal Gear

The Metal Gear series now finds itself in its 25th year creating stealth-action titles, with over dozens of titles.

The franchise originally came to life with Metal Gear in 1987 on NES and MSX2, making this July its 25th anniversary. The original game was quickly followed up with a sequel carrying the subtitle 'Solid Snake' after its main character. (An alternative unofficial sequel called Snake's Revenge released in 1990, but not by Konami).

The series has since been split in two directions, the 'Solid' series and the 'Acid' series.

Metal Gear Solid took the stealth-action genre by storm, delivering a complex and multi-arcing narrative thread, a huge host of characters and some of the most challenging gameplay the genre had seen back in the heyday of the first Playstation.

That thread of games has since gone on to become the primary one the games are known for, bringing out multiple world-class titles on the PS2 and most recently giving us Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The Metal Gear Acid games were given their new moniker to signify a more tactical strategic element to the gameplay, rather than the usual stealth-action fare, and saw their home on the PSP and eventually on mobile.

This year, the long-awaited first foray of the new sub-brand for home consoles is expected to hit. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is taking the series in a new direction yet again, taking its cues from over-the-top action and having more in common with the likes of Ninja Gaiden or Devil's Third, and utilising modern console hardware to power a physics engine which will allow any object in the game world to be sliced and diced procedurally.

In the mean time, players who are looking to catch up on the series and the now incredibly deep and interlinked narrative can pick up the recently released Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, which includes the two PS2 home console games (Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3), plus Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker, the only non-'acid' Metal Gear game to grace the PSP, back in 2010.
