Speaking about her new book Celebrity Culture and the American Dream, author Karen Sternheimer spoke out against mainstream news.
As picked up by Kotaku, Sternheimer appeared on CSPAN-2 in the US, and discussed the various studies oft-cited by mainstead media and the ways in which such studies are either used selectively or warped to help paint the picture of violence in games the way they want to.
"Look at what these studies are actually doing; don't look at the press releases," advises Sternheimer, citing some problematic methodology in the studies most frequently relied upon in the media. "Often times the authors of these studies do not make the same claims which come out when they're reported in sound bites."
"The news media seems to love the story of the problem of media violence. If you look at actual violence, there are much more mundane patterns used to determine whether a young person is more or less likely to be violent."
Sternheimer goes on to say (in the 3 minute video) that the most overlooked violence is the everyday violence rather than the high-profile incidents.
